Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethoscope History

It was back in the year of 1963 when a Professor from the well known Harvard Medical School name David Littman had made-up a stethoscope with new revolution. And nowadays, any stethoscope produced by the Littmann Company is recognized for its excellent and quality. After 1816 when Dr. Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec, invented the very first stethoscope, the design of the stethoscope had changed a lot and Littmann had come with an added value eminence of it when it comes to encounter the difference between low pitch and high pitch sounds during auscultation.

Based on that, Littmann had come up with an idea of dual side stethoscope which later had been invented to most of the Littmann’s stethoscope product include Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethoscope. The idea of a dual side stethoscope is about a chestpiece with an open side for listening to low pitch sounds and a closed side which filtered out lower pitched sounds and let the high pitch sounds becomes more prominent. Furthermore, he has incorporated his stethoscope with additional features which made it more comfortable for the practitioner to use as well as light and practical to carry such as what we can have in the Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethoscope. The level of sound produced by new Littman Stethoscope design had as well improved significantly in its quality compared to what they were before when the 3M Corporation accept Dr. Littmann’s Company, Cardiosonic Inc to join them in 1967.

At that time, 3M as a world leader in health care products had continue to expand and progress the Littmann stethoscope and today we can have a long list of stethoscope with quality such as 3M Littmann Cardiology Stethoscope, Classic II Stethoscope and not at least, Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethescope.

In 1987 a major product development breakthrough was made by 3M engineers when they introduced a tunable diaphragm technology to the Littmann stethoscope. This new tunable diaphragm equipment permits the medical health personnel to adjust the pressure on the chestpiece, for them to confer from bell mode to diaphragm mode and vice-versa. Thus, the chestpiece need not to be moved for different sound frequencies optimization. This technology is one of the highly significant breakthroughs in the art of auscultation with the fact that, the volume of the low frequency sounds will be amplified by a diaphragm rather than a bell and the amplification itself is more visible to the ear and clearer. However it is sad to say that the Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethoscope is not equipped by this advancement.

However, based on the experience that Littmann’s Company have in developing stethoscope, Littmann Lightweight II SE Stethoscope is still a stethoscope that is standing on his own standard and legacy of the stethoscope in its category.
